blancos (ingleses, portugueses, libaneses y sirios), mestizos y negros,
Barbudan People's Movement.
Antiguan Culture
Antigua's culture is a mixture of Middle
Eastern, European and African culture. The African culture is particularly
evident in the food and folk-tales. For instance Ananci stories are still
told to children on the island.
Antiguans are
generally warm and friendly, though not to the extent of other Caribbean
peoples. Most are hard-working, holding two or more jobs and relatively
conservative in dress and speech. The people are highly intelligent, and
have a great sense of humor!
There are several societies that promote
arts, drama, music, and horticulture. There are also cricket and soccer (locally
called football) clubs. Cricket is the national sport, and Antigua has
produced several top international cricketers such as Dr. Vivian Richards,
Andy Roberts, Richie Richardson, and Curtly Ambrose. Sailing is a big
sport in Antigua, which is a major yachting center that hosts the annual
Antigua Sailing Week. Golf and tennis are also enjoyed by Antiguan
residents

Antigua (pronounced An-tee'ga) and Barbuda are located in the middle
of the Leeward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean, roughly 17 degrees
north of the equator. To the south are the islands of Montserrat and
Guadaloupe, and to the north and west are Nevis, St. Kitts, St. Barts,
and St. Martin.
Temperatures generally range from the mid-seventies in the winter to
the mid-eighties in the summer. Annual rainfall averages only 45
inches, making it the sunniest of the Eastern Caribbean Islands, and
the northeast trade winds are nearly constant, flagging only in
September. Low humidity year-round.
Antigua, the largest of the English-speaking Leeward Islands, is about
14 miles long and 11 miles wide, encompassing 108 square miles. Its
highest point is Boggy Peak (1319 ft.), located in the southwestern
corner of the island. Barbuda, a flat coral island with an area of
only 68 square miles, lies approximately 30 miles due north. The
nation also includes the tiny (0.6 square mile) uninhabited island of
Redonda, now a nature preserve. The current population for the nation
is approximately 68,000 and its capital
The island of Antigua is currently celebrating the huge success of its
38 th annual Sailing Week. After months of preparation for the event,
now the largest regatta in the Caribbean and regarded by many sailing
enthusiasts as one of the top three regattas in the world, the whole
island has been in party spirit to celebrate this sensational festival
of the sea.
Antigua Sailing Week took place last month from
24 th – 30 th April, in various stunning locations around the island,
with the world's fastest and most attractive yachts congregating for
racing and a series of social events. Light winds held off until the
very last day of Sailing Week, allowing this year's firm favourite,
Titan XII, Tom Hill's R/P 75 from Puerto Rico, to finish first and win
the Big Boat Racing II with four points and the fleet prize by four
points. Sir Peter Ogden's Swan 601 Spirit of Jethou came in second
place and Bill Alcott and his Equation crew claimed the third place
position.

Antigua was first inhabited by the
Siboney ("stone people"), whose settlements date at least to 2400 BC. The
Siboney were succeeded by the Arawaks, who originated in Venezuela and
gradually migrated up the chain of islands now called the Lesser Antilles.
The warlike Carib people drove the Arawaks from neighboring islands but
apparently did not settle on either Antigua or Barbuda.
Christopher Columbus landed on the
islands in 1493, naming the larger one "Santa Maria de la Antigua." The
English colonized the islands in 1632. Sir Christopher Codrington
established the first large sugar estate in Antigua in 1674, and leased
Barbuda to raise provisions for his plantations. Barbuda's only town is
named after him. Codrington and others brought slaves from Africa's west
coast to work the plantations.
Antiguan slaves were emancipated in 1834
but remained economically dependent on the plantation owners. Economic
opportunities for the new freedmen were limited by a lack of surplus
farming land, no access to credit, and an economy built on agriculture
rather than manufacturing. Poor labor conditions persisted until 1939,
when a member of a royal commission urged the formation of a trade union
movement.
The Antigua Trades and Labor Union,
formed shortly afterward, became the political vehicle for Vere Cornwall
Bird, who became the union's president in 1943. The Antigua Labor Party
(ALP), formed by Bird and other trade unionists, first ran candidates in
the 1946 elections and became the majority party in 1951, beginning a long
history of electoral victories.
Voted out of office in the 1971 general
elections that swept the progressive labor movement into power, Bird and
the ALP returned to office in 1976; the party won renewed mandates in the
general elections in 1984 and 1989. In the 1989 elections, the ruling ALP
won all but two of the 17 seats.
During elections in March 1994, power
passed from Vere Bird to his son, Lester Bird, but remained within the
Antigua Labor Party. The ALP won 11 of the 17 parliamentary seats. The
official opposition in parliament is led by Baldwin Spencer of the United
Progressive Party.
