Cheyenne Mountain
State Park is located in Colorado Springs, west of Highway 115 at the
base of Cheyenne Mountain. The park consists of 1,680 land acres.
Colorado State Parks acquired the land in June of 2000.
Master planning for
the park was completed early in 2004. Phase one construction began in
November 2004. This phase entails carving out roadways, installing
utilities as well as constructing a trailhead parking lot. Work on this
phase is ongoing at this time.
Architectural
design work for the park Visitor Center is now complete, and staff hopes
to bid construction of this building, as well as the entrance station
and trailhead comfort station, soon. Additionally, more trail work is
planned for the future with several efforts by Volunteers for Outdoor
Colorado, the Colorado Youth Corps, as well as local mountain biking
club, Medicine Wheel, completed this past summer. To date, approximately
16.5 miles of natural surface hiking & biking trails have now been
constructed at the park. Colorado State Parks hopes to open Cheyenne
Mountain State Park sometime in 2006. It is our hope to open the
trails for use as soon as possible while the Visitor Center and other
park amenities are being constructed.

Colorado National Monument preserves one
of the grand landscapes of the American West. Sheer-walled canyons,
towering monoliths, colorful formations, desert bighorn sheep, soaring
eagles, and a spectacular road reflect the environment and history of
the plateau-and-canyon country. Historic Rim Rock Drive offers 23 miles
of breathtaking panoramic views and numerous overlooks. Trails lead
across mesa tops and to spectacular overlooks or into backcountry
canyons. Picnicking and camping are available. At an average elevation
of 6,000 feet at the rim, the climate is relatively mild but can change
rapidly to snow or summer storms. Around 275,000 people per year visit
Colorado National Monument to enjoy these and other opportunities. The
monument encompasses some 20,500 acres, and much of which has been
recommended to Congress for designation as wilderness

We are from four different tribal
groups: Chemehuevi, Hopi, Mohave and Navajo. Spirit Mountain is our
Mohave place of emergence, and the lands along the Colorado River are
our home. In the past we hunted, fished and farmed the rich land next to
the river. After gold was discovered in 1848, many people passed through
our land on their way to California. The U.S. government established a
reservation in 1865 for "Indians of the Colorado River and its
tributaries." They were planning to move other tribal groups to our
reservation
